Choosing the Best Electric Vehicle Charging Station for Your Home

Jun 1, 2020 | 0 comments

Electric vehicles (EV) are becoming increasingly more popular in Ontario and as a result installation of EV charging stations have also increased. These charging stations come in three different levels depending on the need of the user. Let’s explore them here:

Level 1 Charging Station

Every EV comes with a level 1 charging station, which plugs in to a standard household outlet usually 110v or 15amps.These charging stations require a designated electric circuit in order to avoid overloading your circuit breaker. In this level you can charge your vehicle with about 8 kilometers per hour. For hybrid vehicles this option may be more than enough as they typically travel 40-80 kilometers on electric mode and the rest on gas mode. However, for electric vehicles it may be an inconvenience due to how long it takes to fully charge the vehicle.

Level 2 Charging Station

This type of charging station is typically found in private households and in public spaces. These stations require 240v to run and they use similar plugs to those used by AC or washing and drying machines. If you decide to go with this option you must install the charging station equipment in your home. We do not recommend that you do this as a DIY project as many unknowns can cause injury, instead we recommend that you contact a Licensed Electrical Contractor such as MADE Electric. Using level 2 charging stations allows your vehicle to charge about 30-50 kilometers per hour.

Level 3 Charging Station

Level 3 charging stations are also known as Direct Current Fast Chargers and they require 480v systems in order to work. These charging stations allow you to charge your vehicle with about 100 kilometers per hour, this is quite an advantage if you are making longer trips. Level 3 charging stations are typically found in designated public and private charging stations, if you are planning a trip and would like to find one near you click here.
