Temporary Power, Toronto

When completing a construction or renovation project, it is essential to ensure that the job site has access to power. This usually entails installing a temporary power supply within the job site, which makes it possible for workers to use essential tools and equipment which require electricity. A temporary power supply must have an electrical pole within less than 70 feet, and will also require a permit.

A temporary power supply has different components – the first and most important one being the pole. Temporary power poles need to be installed correctly to ensure reliable and safe power supply to your job site. They are usually installed underground and need to be connected to the generator or wired power supply. The next component is the panel. The two main types of temporary power panels are unmetered and metered. The main differences between the two types of panels is that an unmetered panel does not have a limit on bandwidth, whereas a metered panel has a bandwidth limit.

The cost for installing a temporary power supply depends on various factors, such as the generators used, the size of the job site, the type of power poles and the type of power panels (metered vs. unmetered). For construction sites specifically, you can install a temporary power supply using a wired setup that connects to a permanent utility source, or by renting a gas powered generator. Using a gas powered generator is generally recommended if the nearest utility source is far away, however it may result in high fuel costs.

It is advisable to hire a licensed electrical contractor to determine the specifications to best suit your purposes and guide you through the entire installation process. Here at Made Electric, we will help to answer any questions you may have, and we will take care of obtaining any permits required while liaising with your building inspector and utility provider to ensure that the entire installation process is completed without any delays.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Will my temporary power be supplied by my utility company, or by some fuel source?

Temporary power systems have a lot of different options depending on the configuration of the job site and distance from power access. If the job site is a reasonable distance within power access, you can use a wired setup to connect to a permanent utility source. Otherwise, you will have to use a generator which requires a fuel source.

Is it possible to install an underground temporary power system?

Most temporary power systems in construction sites utilize overhead power solutions, since it is the most cost-efficient solution. However, underground solutions are also available for projects which require temporary power to be routed underground.

Are inspections or permits required for a temporary power system?

According to the ESA, a notification of work must be filed for all electrical work completed in Ontario. Regardless of whether you are using a wired setup or a gas-powered generator, you will need to comply with all regulations and permits required according to the ESA.
