Temporary Power, North York
At some point, many homeowners will need to do some sort of renovation or major project in their homes. While the project is being completed, workers may have limited access to the home’s electrical supply, which is problematic given that major projects usually require a power supply for lighting and essential tools. For that reason, it is necessary to install a temporary power supply, which will give workers the necessary electrical power needed to complete projects in a timely and efficient manner.
A temporary power supply has various components, including an electrical power pole and temporary power panels. The power pole is usually installed underground within 70 feet from the job site, and needs to be connected to either a wired power supply or generator. If the temporary power supply system is using a wired supply, the power pole will be connected to a permanent utility source near the job site, however if the nearest utility source is not nearby, a gas powered generator can be used as an alternative. The power panels used can either be metered or unmetered. An unmetered panel does not have a limit on bandwidth, whereas a metered panel has a bandwidth limit.
The cost and setup of a temporary power supply system is dependent on many factors, including but not limited to the job site size and layout, and the type of generators, power poles and panels used. It is advisable to hire a licensed electrical contractor to help determine the optimal setup for your job site. Here at Made Electric, we will guide you through the entire installation process and answer all of your questions, while taking care of obtaining any required permits.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Will my temporary power be supplied by my utility company, or by some fuel source?
Temporary power systems have a lot of different options depending on the configuration of the job site and distance from power access. If the job site is a reasonable distance within power access, you can use a wired setup to connect to a permanent utility source. Otherwise, you will have to use a generator which requires a fuel source.
Is it possible to install an underground temporary power system?
Most temporary power systems in construction sites utilize overhead power solutions, since it is the most cost-efficient solution. However, underground solutions are also available for projects which require temporary power to be routed underground.
Are inspections or permits required for a temporary power system?
According to the ESA, a notification of work must be filed for all electrical work completed in Ontario. Regardless of whether you are using a wired setup or a gas-powered generator, you will need to comply with all regulations and permits required according to the ESA.
